Welcome Back!Welcome 2018!

I hope all of you had an enjoyable Winter Break with lots of fun and great family time.  I cannot wait to hear all about it on Monday.

For the next 3 months our Grade 4's will be working hard and hopefully showing much growth in their reading, writing and math.  Spelling Tests will be every two weeks as this allows us time to work in the class on the concepts and give students much time to practice at home.  Here are the themes and concepts this term, in hopes that the support in their learning will carry on at home:

Math

- Multiplication and Division - memorizing facts, double digit concepts, patterns, and problem solving

Reading (Language Arts, Science and Social Studies)

- Personal Book reviews (focus on Character traits and plot (beginning, middle and end))
- Vocabulary strategies (how to gain understanding of unknown words by definitions, word part clues, and context clues)
- Inferring and finding the Authors Purpose of an article, story or informative text

Writing (Language Arts, Science and Social Studies)

- descriptive writing (expanding vocabulary,  adding details)
- spelling strategies (say it slow, try it 3 ways, look for clues around the room)
- grammar and punctuation (natural pauses with commas and periods) and capital letters
- neatness and reviewing work before handing in
- answering questions in complete sentences

Themes for this term are:

- The Winter Olympics (focus on Canada)
- Sun and Moon relationships
- Setting Goals (socially and academically)
- Culture of First Nations in Canada and how they adapted to their natural environment
