What are Spirit Buddies?:
Spirit buddies are a way to allow students to feel connected to one another and the community of their classroom and school where every student "has a support network, and is welcomed to the shared space every day" (Katz, 2012, p. 53). Students then know there will always be someone to connect and talk with in the morning allowing for relationships to be established and strengthened.
How do Spirit Buddies Work?:
Each spirit buddy group is comprised of 3-4 students and they meet with one another at the beginning of each day for a "few minutes . . . to greet and welcome each other, check in, and start the day in community" (Katz, 2012, p. 53). Students are to ask each other how they are doing, what they did the night before or on the weekend, and the conversation is open allowing them to talk about anything that is appropriate.
