Terrariums and Invasive Plants

Terrariums

Tomorrow we will be creating Terrariums using 2L pop bottles, small plants and decorative accents.  Students have been researching the plants and finding what they need to thrive and survive.  They will be taking these plants home tomorrow to care for them.  By researching and having a guest speaker this week discussing invasive plants, we have discovered that our plants are mostly tropical plants and are considered invasive (not native).  If you choose not to keep your plant or your plant does not survive, please dispose of the plant by taking it to the yard waste recycling depot.  Students are very excited about these plants and my hope is they take care of them so they grow and become part of your home.

Invasive Plants Presentation

On Monday afternoon, a guest speaker from Ministry of Forests, with a specialty in invasive plants (who happens to be Greta's mom) came into the classroom.  She shared many amazing facts on Invasive Plants in our local area.  With this knowledge, we are going to be taking action at Peterson Creek Park in making sure the invasive plants do not over take the native plants that thrive there.  With Mrs. Schultz help and hopefully having Greta's mom come back, we will be taking a walk down there near the end of May.  We may be pulling some of the weeds and invasive plants out, taking pictures and writing down information.

Coming home in the next couple weeks will be pamphlets and information for you and your family on invasive plants in our area.  One being an app on how to report an invasive plant, whether growing in your yard or in your area.

 APP: Report a Weed

Social Emotional Awareness Book

Coming home this week will be a booklet to give more information on the 3 books discussed on class.  Please go over this with your child.

This weeks book is "Lying up a Storm"

Yukon Dan

Yukon Dan came for a visit yesterday.  He was very knowledgeable and brought a ton of resources and activities for the students  to engage in.  He gave a lecture on the history of mining and the gold rush in British Columbia (which we will be studying in more detail later in the year).  Here are some pictures of yesterday.

Social Emotional Awareness

For the past two weeks the grade 4's have been reviewing some social/emotional concepts and applying them into their day through conversation with spirit buddies, activities in the class and outside play.

We have read "But, it's not my fault" and "Tease Monster".  Reading and discussing these books have been very valuable to our interactions with each other.

Today students were asked to discuss, "At the end of grade 4, how do you want to be remembered?"
Here are their responses:

Terrariums

In Science we are exploring plants...why are they important?, parts, seed dispersal, adaptations and invasive species.  We will be making terrariums as well of a herb or small plant.

Please send in your empty 2L pop bottles to help us build our terrariums.

Day of Sucwentwecw

Friday, April 5th is Day of Sucwentwecw.  The topic being explored is Balancing our actions: the self, the family, the community, the land.  We will be spending most of the morning at Peterson Creek Park, participating in a tree planting ceremony of a Ponderosa Pine and "hearting the park" by observing the different plants and trees and how we can take care of this beautiful space.

Please prepare your students for a walk and possibly rain.  Wear proper foot wear, jackets for rain and warmth, and a hat.
